I am concerned re. observation of the speed limit on Garleigh Road. I live near the top (Moorlands) and frequently witness motorists breaking the 30mph limit. This is particularly but not exclusively related to weekend motorcyclists - it is very common to see riders entering the village from the south at high speed and often with their hands OFF the handlebars. Similarly, many riders accelerate hard up hill, probably doing 50mph+ by the time they reach the top of the hill. This is an obvious hazard to pedestrians and more responsible motorists. Has the Council considered recommending speed bumps? - one or two placed just to the north of the Silverton Lane junction would deter offenders and offer protection for pedestrian school children.
First, having got into trouble for not making it clear enough THESE ARE MY PERSONAL VIEWS NOT PARISH COUNCIL POLICY!
I too live on Garleigh Road and agree with you all the way, Roy. However, I'd go even further and say it's not just motor bikers showing off that are a hazard. I am absolutely astonished at how many young mothers I see charging up and down the hill delivering and seeking kids from school.
I know that the Parish Council has repeatedly asked both the police and the district/county authorities for traffic calming measures - admittedly mainly north of the river although I have mentioned Garleigh Road - but it appears to come down to money. Or rather the lack of it.
I will put your concerns forward at the next meeting if you like but it would be even better if you came and presented your own case.
P.S. I normally don't agree with "Anonymous" comments but, being a technophobe, I couldn't cope with the profile selection ( no URL ) and kept getting told I couldn't post my comment. I've got round it by going "Anonymous" myself and adding my name at the end of the Blog. I'd be delighted if someone could put me right.
Hi Roy, I was going to phone you but as it's late, just to let you know I've requested your concerns be put onto the AGENDA for the next PC meeting on the 20th May - please also feel free to come and put your comments in person - procedure allows the public to speak at the start of a PC meeting to get their ideas/comments/concerns across to the Council members. Procedures allow you to sit and observe the meeting after this, but unfortunately it doesn't allow any further comment from the individual. You'd be most welcome - we keep trying to get the public more involved.
Swine flu - why did the uk not do what China has done with the school visitors who have swine flu? Perhaps if we'd done something about those who showed the first symtoms, then we may not have lost UK residents to this bug. Why should we now have to rely on a vacine? The bug mutates like ordinary flu (or so I believe), so what happens next year?
Just a note to say pleased to see you are supporting Rothbury youth project. They do an excellent job and are a really valuable asset to the village. hope they receive your continued support.
Re Rooks on the High Street. A few weeks ago I emailed the Parish Council details of a balloon/kite device which is widely used to keep birds off crops etc which could be flown above one of the high buildings on the High Street. No Response!
Another possibility is 'birdgard' (Google it) which keeps birds away by randomly emitting predator & distress calls. The smallest will deal with 1.5 acres, which is more than enough to cover the area in question.
